Overview:
Children will create a vibrant animal-themed artwork that combines splatter painting, sparkles, and texture made from unconventional and upcycled materials. By the end of the week, each student will have a mixed-media animal art piece that is bursting with color, movement, and personality.
Learning Objectives: - Explore texture, color, and shape through mixed-media techniques - Learn how to creatively repurpose everyday and unusual objects in art - Practice layering, composition, and expressive mark-making - Develop an appreciation for both wild animals and artistic experimentation
Supplies: - Watercolor or mixed-media paper (11x14 or larger) - Tempera or acrylic paints - Glitter, sequins, metallic foil - Liquid glue, glue sticks, Mod Podge - Brushes, sponges, droppers, spray bottles, and toothbrushes (for splatter) -
Unconventional materials: bubble wrap, cotton balls, pipe cleaners, scrub pads, yarn and fabric scraps, cardboard and foil pieces, sandpaper, pasta (uncooked), buttons, feathers - Animal stencils or reference images - Aprons or old t-shirts
Daily Breakdown: Choose Your Animal - Show images of colorful or patterned animals - Let kids choose (or invent) an animal - Use splatter techniques for vibrant backgrounds - Let backgrounds dry overnight Sketch + Base Shapes - Sketch or cut out animal shape - Block in main areas with color - Add sparkle accents
Texture Time! - Introduce table of 'unconventional textures' - Demonstrate and apply various textures creatively with a multitude of materials
Detail & Depth - Add details with markers or paint pens - Emphasize key features and sparkle accents
